EVALUATION OF TOPIC

Healthy Eating

Key messages:

  1. There are five important food groups in the eatwell plate.
  2. Foods from each of the five food groups must be eaten in different proportions in order to achieve a balanced diet.  We need more from some food groups than others.
  3. A balanced diet can help us perform to our best.
  4. Different foods belong to different food groups.
  5. It is important to eat a balanced diet.  A balanced diet is a diet that contains food from each of the food groups, with more from some food groups than others.

The Dairy Council communicate important health messages to children in a fun, interactive and creative way. The programme is designed to help pupils explore the concept of balance; balance within their diet, based on eating a variety of foods from the five food groups, and balance within their lifestyle, focusing on the importance of accumulating at least one hour’s activity each day.

We will be able to examine food labels and the information they provide.

Investigation

What is the best way to preserve a slice of bread?

We discovered that the best way to preserve a slice of bread, is to freeze it.

Art

We made portraits in the style of Giuseppe Arcimboldo who was an Italian artist who lived over 400 years ago.  He painted people but he liked to use different objects, such as fruit and vegetables, to make up the faces,

Key message:

Foods grow and are ready to be eaten at different times of the year.

Investigation

What does a plant need to grow?

We discovered that a plants needs water and sunlight to grow.

Key messages:

1. There are a number of processes involved in making foods.

2. Different animals and poultry produce different types of food.

3. A variety of people are involved in bringing the food we eat to our tables.

4. There are many different types of farmers who produce the food we eat.

Section 1: Where does our food come from?

Key messages:

1. Sometimes we need to import foods from other countries because these foods are not always available in Northern Ireland.

2. Different foods come from different countries.  Different areas of the world are suited to growing different foods for several reasons including their climate.

3. A large variety of foods can be produced in Northern Ireland.

4. Food has to be transported from the country it comes from to Northern Ireland.

The children in our class brought in food from all around the world.

We improved our map work skills by finding all the countries on our world map.

We also enjoyed eating all the different foods.  Some children got to try some things they had never tasted before!
